Cemetery services

Our knowledgeable staff are here to guide you through planning a final resting place for you or your loved ones. Contact us and let us know how we can help.

Arrange an interment (burial)

Prior to making arrangements for a burial, interment rights must be owned or purchased. To arrange a burial, we require notice at least 2 business days in advance.

The rights holder, or someone acting on behalf of the rights holder, must sign off on the interment.

Full casket burial

Full casket burials will be arranged by a funeral home with cemetery staff. The funeral home will also be responsible for providing the lowering mechanism and greens, and a vault/liner if desired.  A burial permit must be provided by the funeral home.

Cremation interment

Cremation interments do not require a funeral home, and may be set up as private services directly by the family. Contact cemetery staff to arrange a date and time for the interment.  A cremation certificate must be provided at the time of the interment.

Frequently asked questions

Find details for some common cemetery-related questions below. For more information, email our cemetery staff or call 905-318-5932, ext. 6510.

Contact us for information on what is available based on your needs and location preference. Our staff can meet you on-site at the cemetery to show you what is available and answer any questions.

Once a lot, plot or niche has been selected, you will enter into a contract with Haldimand County confirming the transfer and purchase of interment rights. At the time of purchase, the County will provide you with a copy of the Cemetery By-law, price list, and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario’s Consumer Information Guide.

Once payment has been made in full, we will issue you or the designated rights holder the Interment Rights Certificate for the lot, plot or niche.

Adult lots (1 m x 3 m or 4 ft x 10 ft) - 1 casket burial and up to 4 cremation interments.

Infant lots (1 m x 1 m) - 1 infant casket.

Cremation lots (1 m x 1 m) - up to 2 cremation interments.

Columbarium niches - up to 2 standard-sized urns.

When interment rights are purchased or transferred, the transferee effectively has all rights over the plot or niche. They have the legal authority to arrange and approve interments in the plot and can order the installation of monuments and markers, and inscriptions on monuments, markers, and columbarium shutters.

If a plot has no living rights holder, the rights are typically passed to the surviving spouse. If there is no living spouse, the rights will pass to all living heirs.

For any interment to take place, all living heirs will need to give their permission.

Haldimand County will buy back any unused lot, plot or niche at the current listed sale price, less the amount contributed to the care and maintenance fund at the time of initial purchase.

To initiate the buy-back process, you must provide:

  • A written and signed declaration of intent to sell the lot, plot or niche back to the County
  • The interment rights certificate endorsed with a signature

If any portion of the interment rights have been exercised, the county will not repurchase the lot, plot or niche.

Haldimand County does not permit the sale of a lot, plot or niche to a third party.

All markers and monuments must be purchased directly through a monuments company - the County does not sell any. Once purchased, you can arrange to have it installed. See our price list for installation costs.

Before making a purchase, we recommend you contact our staff to confirm what type/size of memorial is permitted on your lot. You should also review our Cemetery By-law for additional regulations.

As per the Funerals, Burials and Cremation Services Act, all cemeteries in Ontario are required to have a care and maintenance fund. A portion of the purchase price for interment rights, markers and monuments goes towards this fund. These amounts are regulated by the province and can be found on the price list.

Interest earned on this fund is used to maintain the cemetery to ensure respectful and safe upkeep in perpetuity.

Under Haldimand County’s Cemetery By-law, the interment of animals in any form is prohibited in all municipal cemeteries.
