Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum bell tower undergoing restoration
The Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum requires the restoration of its existing bell tower to repair structural issues and deterioration that have occurred over the years in order to return it back to its original state.
The Bell Tower Restoration will run from Friday April 11 to the end of May – dependent on weather conditions. The museum will remain open with regular hours.
The Wilson MacDonald Memorial School Museum is a historically important part of the Selkirk community. The one-room brick schoolhouse was built in 1872 and was designated for its historical value through By-Law 61-82. The bell tower is listed in the designation as one of several character-defining elements.
The one-room school was in operation until 1966. In 1967, the building re-opened as Wilson Pugsley MacDonald Memorial School to honor the local poet who was born in nearby Cheapside in 1880.
