Supervisor of Dietary, Laundry & Housekeeping, Grandview Lodge

Position Summary

Works alongside the full-time Dietary Supervisor to oversee dietary services and cater to the unique nutritional needs of each resident at Grandview Lodge while ensuring adherence to corporate, Grandview Lodge, and Ministry of Long-Term Care regulations. Additionally, manages the housekeeping and laundry departments to maintain a clean and welcoming environment for all residents, staff, and visitors.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills

Education

  • Community College Diploma relative to the area of responsibility, completed within more than two academic years
  • Safe Handlers and/or Food Services Worker Certificate
  • Special consideration will be given to applicants with the following:
    • Knowledge of the Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA)
    • DementiAbility Training

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of current related experience, including some supervisory experience.
  • Current membership with the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management.
  • Special consideration will be given to applicants with:
    • Prior work experience in a unionized environment

Knowledge/Skills

  • Sound understanding of legislation, and regulations relative to the area of responsibility.
  • Good understanding of municipal government, its operations, services, and legislations that affect Grandview’ Lodge’s responsibilities.
  • Firm knowledge of business processes and financial management methods to assist with the development of budgets and to work within approved budgets.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence, motivate, provide training, using flexible communication styles and to ensure suitable agreement, decisions are reached.
  • Demonstrated initiative, and ability to make decisions involving multiple routine tasks, affecting department level.

Responsibilities

The incumbent is responsible for, but not limited to:

Corporate

  • Follow the GVL philosophy of delivering care to Residents by utilizing DementiAbility and GPA principles.
  • Ensure the Resident’s Bill of Rights is respected and the guidelines set out by relevant provincial legislation, regulations, and directives are followed, by communicating with residents, visitors, and other personnel in a courteous manner.
  • Participate as a member of Grandview’s leadership team, under the direction of the Administrator, and contribute to the development of goals and objectives for Grandview; chair or be an active participant in meetings designed to ensure actions are identified and taken contributing to continuous quality improvement at Grandview Lodge.
  • Develop dietary department goals and objectives in conjunction with approved Corporate, Divisional and Grandview Lodge Strategic Goals, and direct dietary operations to achieve those goals.
  • Develop environmental services, departmental goals and objectives in conjunction with the Corporate and Social Services Division, along with Grandview Lodge Strategic Goals, and direct environmental operations to achieve these goals.

People

  • Oversee the activities of, and provide supervision of all Dietary Aides, Cooks, Laundry and Housekeeping Aides including management of their performance. Meets with residents, and/ or families to resolve concerns related to the dietary, housekeeping and laundry departments.
  • Ensure that dietary, housekeeping and laundry staff work safely and collaboratively with the current established goals and objectives by providing leadership and guidance. Prior to posting, review and authorize dietary, laundry and housekeeping staff schedules to guarantee the presence of adequately trained dietary aides and cooks for continuous availability of high-quality meal-programs.
  • Guarantee that housekeeping and laundry aides perform their duties safely, offering training as required to maintain a clean environment for staff, residents and their families.
  • Engage families and Residents to support dining service and meal planning and respond to issues which have escalated.
  • Resolve any escalated concerns raised by families regarding cleanliness or laundry services, to ensure the well-being of all residents and their families.

Timeline

  • Ensure that all meals are prepared and cooked within required timelines.

Money/Asset

  • Provide direct input to the development of the Dietary, Housekeeping and Laundry Departments capital and operating budget along with monitoring expenditures of assigned accounts.

Functional

  • Dietary Operations
    • Manage, alongside the full-time Dietary Supervisor, the daily operation of the Dietary Services department such that all food is safely prepared and served to meet the needs of Residents.
    • Manage the overall operations of the Dietary Services in a cost-effective manner, including ordering food and supplies, and adhering to the approved budget.
    • Liaise with the contracted Dietitian to review, evaluate and update individual Resident Care Plans as required.
    • As assigned, oversee and coordinate work with the contractors, and other agencies ensuring a clear understanding of the work to be completed and the processes and procedures required to result in cost-effective completion of all work.
  • Policy Development and Legislative Compliance
    • Ensure all WHMIS supplies are managed with appropriate documentation.
    • Maintain record management system to track all the work carried out and such documentation is readily retrievable.
  • Employee Wellness, Attendance, and Performance Management
    • Inspire and positively influence a team of direct reports to establish a cohesive team and maintain a positive work environment.
    • Supervise the daily operations of the dietary department including providing direction to and monitoring the performance of dietary staff.
    • Oversee the daily tasks of the housekeeping/laundry staff, providing guidance and managing performance to ensure efficient task completion.
    • Provide direction to the Administrative Assistant- Leadership and Schedulers to assign tasks and responsibilities.
    • Co-chair the Grandview Lodge Health and Safety Committee.
    • Administer Grandview Lodge’s Attendance Support and Absenteeism Program for the Environmental Services department.
    • Oversee the performance of Environmental Services employees.
    • Liaise with the Supervisor of Employee Wellness with respect to workplace accommodations and the return to work process.
    • Initiate investigative and corrective actions related to occupational health and safety.
    • Develop and monitor modified work programs for the Environmental Services team in collaboration with the Supervisor of Employee Wellness.

Position Requirement(s)

  • A current police check (LE 220 or Equivalent) from within the last 6 months
  • Two-Step and Mantoux Test within the past 6 months

Working Conditions

  • Regular Business Hours: Monday to Friday (8:30am - 4:30pm)
  • Occasional overtime and on-call to assist with emergencies, and to meet ebbs and flows of workloads/deadlines
