Statement regarding passing of Ward 1 Councillor Stewart Patterson

Today, Haldimand County is mourning the loss of Ward 1 Councillor Stewart Patterson. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, colleagues and anyone who had the privilege to know him.

Patterson first became a member of Haldimand County Council in 2018 after winning the Ward 1 seat. He was acclaimed in the 2022 municipal election with no competitors, and held the Ward 1 seat until the date of his passing. Most recently, on November 14, 2024, he was appointed Deputy Mayor.

A true advocate for his constituents, Patterson believed in the power of direct, personal connections. He was not an avid user of social media and appreciated the sincerity of a phone call or a knock on the door to discuss concerns and find solutions.

Among his many causes, Patterson promoted accessibility, staff recognition and improving road safety. Additionally, he was a staunch proponent of transparent and accountable government, earning the respect of colleagues and residents for his integrity and commitment to good governance.

Patterson sat on numerous municipal boards and committees during his time on Council including (but not limited to) the Accessibility Advisory Committee, Long Point Region Conservation Authority Board, Haldimand Norfolk Housing Corporation Board and the Tom Howe Citizen Liaison Committee. He contributed to the community in many ways and was, among other designations, a dedicated Police Services Board member and Jarvis Lion.

“During his years of service, Councillor Patterson demonstrated a strong commitment to our community and its residents. He will be remembered as a kind, thoughtful, diligent individual who worked hard to make a difference. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all those impacted by this difficult loss,” said Chief Administrative Officer Cathy Case.

"On behalf of the Council of Haldimand County, I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Councillor Patterson’s family, friends and those whose lives he touched. Councillor Patterson was a mentor to many, and will be remembered for his service to the community and contributions to Haldimand County,” stated Haldimand Mayor Shelley Ann Bentley.
