Haldimand Workforce: Hauser’s Healthcare Is a Family Affair

Phil Hauser has been growing the Family Business based on Haldimand Values

Hauser’s Healthcare is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2025. Like many businesses, the small family pharmacy has grown by leaps and bounds, opening up locations across Ontario. But it’s an expansion, Phil Hauser says, that is only possible thanks to his upbringing in Haldimand.

In addition to the original Dunnville location, Hauser has expanded the business to seven more locations, some closer to home than others: Hagersville; Simcoe and Port Dover in nearby Norfolk County; Hamilton and St. Catharines; Wallaceburg, south of Sarnia; and Mactier, south of Parry Sound. The focus is clear: smaller towns, and smaller markets, with a few exceptions.

“We delight in giving personal attention and personal experience to our customers,” explains Hauser. “I think that it actually makes us better at what we do, from a healthcare point of view. We can offer better care because we know the people.”

That’s an approach that certainly feels more at-home in rural communities like those in Haldimand, as opposed to big cities where care is more impersonal.

Under Phil’s leadership, Hauser’s Pharmacy has grown into Hauser’s Healthcare, offering supportive services and equipment rentals for members of the community. It’s a push that he says is drawn from the values and philosophies that he learned from his parents.

With multiple locations in his booming business, Hauser chooses to live in Dunnville, a short walk away from the original Hauser’s Pharmacy. While overseeing locations takes him all across Western Ontario, Hauser always enjoys coming home to his wife and children.

“I’ve been around the world,” Hauser says. “I got my degree in the U.K. I studied for a few years at the University of Waterloo. But I always wanted to come back to Haldimand County – not just because of the family business, but because of the work-life balance.

“It sounds cliche!” he laughs. “But it’s true.”

Hauser says that he wanted to be a present parent for his children. “One of the advantages of being in the communities in Haldimand is the access to both sides of life,” he explains. “I can walk home for lunch, and my kids can see me coming home from work. That matters a lot to me.”

“And we’re also not too far from being out in the country, and being able to appreciate going on walks, or going down to the shoreline, or travelling up and down the Grand River in a canoe,” Hauser continues. “There was a lot about that lifestyle that appealed to us.”

It’s clear that small-town focus can lead to widespread success. Hauser’s Healthcare is proof that small businesses can grow both within and beyond Haldimand, while you can personally have a healthy and adventurous lifestyle.

“I think, as a business owner, working within these communities in Haldimand can be very rewarding,” Hauser says. “If you’re a business owner that values their customers on a very personal level, then there’s a lot of opportunities here for you.”
