Haldimand County seeking resident input to shape future of local waste management programs and services
Haldimand County is currently in the process of developing a Solid Waste Management Plan that will shape the future of waste management programs and services across the municipality. Public engagement is critical to the plan’s development and a survey has been developed to obtain community input.
Waste management involves many services, including curbside collection, yard waste programs, hazardous waste events, drop off depot operations and more. Each program plays a role in reducing waste sent to landfills and protecting the environment.
Recent audits of municipal waste conducted in 2024 found that, on average, each household sets out 1.5 bags of garbage per week. Of that, 36.1% consists of food waste that could be composted and diverted from landfills.
As Haldimand explores new options for waste diversion, such as introducing an organics collection program and expanding yard waste pickup, it is important to consider both the environmental benefits and the financial impacts.
Resident feedback will help staff understand what changes, if any, the public would like to see when it comes to waste management programs, and evaluate how these programs could affect service levels, taxes, and long-term planning.
The Solid Waste Management Plan survey asks respondents to share information about their current waste disposal practices, use and knowledge of municipal disposal facilities and programs, and ideas/desires for enhancements to current services.
The survey can be accessed online at haldimandcounty.ca/waste; it will be open from April 7, 2025 until April 25, 2025. It is expected that survey results, along with a draft Solid Waste Management Plan, will be presented to Council for consideration on June 17, 2025.
