Accounting/Tax Clerk, Finance

Wage Range Hourly: $26.840 - $31.071
Position Status: Permanent full-time
Work Hours: 35 per week
Location: Cayuga, ON (Haldimand County Administration Building)

Position Summary
The Accounting Tax Clerk will undertake a variety of accounting functions including the processing of accounts payable, journal entries, and disbursement of cheques. The incumbent will also respond to inquiries concerning Accounts Payable and Property Taxes. Lastly, they will undertake a variety of duties relative to the generation and receipt of revenues through property taxes.
Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills
Education
- Grade 12 or equivalent plus an additional program of up to one year
Experience
- Over one year, up to and including two years of previous related experience and orientation, training & adjustment on the job itself
Or equivalent to the above.
Knowledge/Skills
- Good understanding of general accounting principals
- Good interpersonal skills including ability to de-escalate negative customer interactions and resolve conflicts
- Strong judgement skills and discretion to ensure proper release of information
- Ability to work as a member of a team
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines with high attention to detail
- A valid Ontario driver’s licence, as occasional travel is required
- Technology Aptitude
- The incumbent must possess a combination of introductory and intermediate level computer skills scored at 65% or higher for Outlook and at least one of Word/Excel/PowerPoint to ensure their:
- Proven ability to apply essential functions of desktop software to create simple spreadsheets, documents,
- Send and receive emails,
- Use Internet for research,
- File management
- And/or require introductory to intermediate knowledge of department or division-specific software to accomplish job tasks
- The incumbent must possess a combination of introductory and intermediate level computer skills scored at 65% or higher for Outlook and at least one of Word/Excel/PowerPoint to ensure their:
Responsibilities
The incumbent is responsible for, but not limited to:
People
- Provide customer service at the front counter as required
Functional
- Accounting Duties
- Perform a variety of accounting tasks such as preparing journal entries, account analysis, reconciliations and working papers
- Input data including journal entries, accounts payable invoices, cleared cheques and payroll information
- Review vendor/supplier statements to validate outstanding accounts payable
- Process cheques and EFT payments to vendors
- Process returns of cash deposits held by the County
- Collect Corporate Purchasing Card distribution forms and create related journal entries
- Answer and provide relevant information related to accounts payable inquiries from staff and suppliers using strong judgement skills and discretion to ensure proper release of information
- Answer and provide relevant information related to tax inquiries received from lawyers, ratepayers and County staff using strong judgement skills and discretion to ensure proper release of information
- Prepare Tax Certificates
- Process tax payments including posting of same
- Process tax adjustments
- Assist in depositing daily cash receipts at local branch of Haldimand County’s bank
- Reconcile EFT payments received for Accounts Receivable and other miscellaneous revenues
- Provide back-up for Accounts Payable Clerk and Customer Service Representatives, as required.
- Provide input into the development of appropriate Accounting Services policies and procedures / forms

- File both hard copy and electronic to ensure it is available and current
