Registration for Haldimand County Public Library summer programs opens June 19

Starting Monday, June 19, registration for Haldimand County Public Library’s summer programs opens at all six Haldimand Library branches. This year’s theme is “Check it Out!” and offers the chance for children to explore through themed parties, Storytimes, crafts and more.

The programs are open to children aged 3-12, with in-person registration required. Program dates, times and costs are available at local branches and will be available on the library’s website in early June.

In addition to registered programs, the Library is also offering free summer reading clubs for children and teens. Children aged 12 and under can participate in the Junior Reading Club while teens 13-18 can sign up for the Teen Summer Reading Club.

Participants in both clubs will receive a ballot for every print or digital library book they read throughout the summer, entering them into draws for a chance to win cash and other prizes. Draw dates for these prizes can be found at each branch.

Along with the cash prize draws, Junior Reading Club participants will also get to choose a special prize from the library treasure chest for every 15 library books they read.

The library will also be hosting a special children’s event, Club Rex! This hands-on presentation will teach children about dinosaurs, other prehistoric creatures and the world they lived in. A Club Rex! session will take place this summer at all Haldimand County Public Library branches. This is a free program, open to everyone. Times and locations can be found at your local library branch or on the library website. Registration is required and parents or guardians are asked to stay in the library.

Haldimand County recognizes National AccessAbility Week from May 28 to June 3

Haldimand County recognizes National AccessAbility Week from May 28 to June 3

HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON –  National AccessAbility Week (May 28 – June 3) is a time to honour the valuable contributions of Canadians with disabilities and highlight the importance of identifying, removing and preventing barriers to inclusion and accessibility.

Haldimand County recognized the week by hosting an internal AccessAbility Awareness Challenge on May 29. Haldimand County members of Council and employees were invited to participate in a variety of challenges to simulate different types of barriers that residents may experience, including a wheelchair tight space transfer, a low vision walk, a schizophrenia simulation, dexterity challenges, and more.

After taking part in the low vision walk challenge, Mayor Bentley shared, ” We have a responsibility to create an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of ability, can navigate our streets, access our services, and participate in our community. Together, we will continue to strive to make our communities more inclusive, making Haldimand County a more accessible county for all residents to live, work and play.”

One way that Haldimand County prioritizes accessibility is through the inclusion of the Accessibility Advisory Committee. This committee provides practical knowledge on a wide-range of accessibility and disability concerns including: physical, visual, hearing impairment, intellectual, mental health, senior’s issues and communication. The committee meets regularly to review and make accessibility recommendations on municipal capital projects and County services.

“Accessibility is not just about making things accessible; it’s about empowering individuals and fostering inclusion,” stated Brian Grice, Haldimand County’s Accessibility Coordinator. “When we prioritize accessibility, we unlock the doors to a world where everyone can participate, contribute, and thrive. Today’s event was a great opportunity to show, at a very basic level, some of the barriers that members of our own community struggle with on a daily basis. Haldimand County is committed towards eliminating barriers and helping our community to become a place for all.”

Haldimand County encourages residents to prepare for planned Hydro One outage in Caledonia area

Haldimand County encourages residents to prepare for planned Hydro One outage in Caledonia area

HALDIMAND COUNTY, ON – On Saturday, June 3, 2023, Hydro One will be replacing critical equipment at its Caledonia Transmission Station that require power to be shut off in the Caledonia area from 10 p.m. to approximately 6 a.m. on June 4.

Residents in the Caledonia area are encouraged to check Hydro One’s planned outage map to confirm whether they will be affected.

Residents affected by the outage are reminded of the following:

  • Make sure your appliances, such as the stove, are in the off position.
  • Make sure your cell phones and extended battery packs are fully charged.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Use a cooler with ice for items you’ll need during the planned outage.
  • If you plan to use a generator, remember to use it in a dry area outdoors away from any open windows, doors and vents.
  • Use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns instead of candles. If using candles, place them in a secure holder and cover them with a glass chimney, away from children and pets.
  • Make sure your home has battery-operated smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Ensure alarms have been tested and are working.
  • Municipal water service will not be affected. For those with private water treatment systems, check on the treatment equipment once power is restored to make sure it is operational before using the water.
  • Have non-perishable foods on hand that do not require cooking (e.g. snack bars, trail mix, fruit).
  • Treat intersections with non-functioning stoplights as four-way stops.
  • Have your 72 hour emergency kit handy.

Residents within the planned outage area are also encouraged to sign up for status notifications on the Hydro One website and check the outage map for updates on restoration time.

For more information on what to do before, during and after a power outage, visit the Haldimand-Norfolk Health Unit’s website.
