Tree Planting

Trees are an important part of our natural and cultural landscape. We recognize the benefits they bring to our community and encourage new growth through our tree-planting programs.

Street tree planting

You can request a new street tree be planted on the County property in front or beside your house free of charge. There are a limited number of trees are available each year and applicants will be selected based on the most suitable sites for the species available. Tree choices must adhere to the Haldimand County street tree species list.

Apply by the end of December to be eligible for planting in the upcoming Spring planting season (April-May). Applications received after the end of December will be added to the next Spring planting season.

Downtown street tree revitalization projects

Haldimand County’s Forest Strategy and Management Plan identifies the goal of transitioning towards proactive tree establishment and replacement, applying the right place principle and using new technologies in selected areas to integrate trees within hardscapes such as downtown cores.

  1. Promoting collaboration between the County, service groups, volunteers, businesses and residents who live, work and contribute to the downtown cores. Development of a comprehensive design for street tree planting within the hardscape areas of the downtown cores.
  2. Maximizing canopy cover within the downtown cores as well as the associated community benefits the trees provide.
  3. Planting the right tree in the right place to minimize future maintenance costs.
  4. Reusing existing tree hardware and developing a standard for tree hardware.
  5. Reduce conflicts between street trees and other infrastructure.
  6. Utilizing the existing planting infrastructure such as structural soils and planting pits.
  7. Increase the beautification of the downtown cores as gateways to their communities.
  8. Successful implementation and installation of the design.

The scope of work for each downtown project involves:

  1. Pre-design and data collection, surveying, preparing topographic maps and survey of utilities with our landscape architectural consultant.
  2. A detailed review of the existing tree infrastructure including the suitability of the existing tree placement and quality of existing hardware (grates, guards and electrical).
  3. Preliminary design proposing trees to be refurbished, removed or new trees planted and their locations.
  4. Public Consultation
  5. Detailed Design for Tendering
  6. Tender Preparation
  7. Contract Administration of the contractor installing the trees.

  • Tree size: 50 mm wire basket, 6 to 8 ft tall – trees come staked, tied and mulched with rodent guard and watering bag included.
  • Plaque size: 8x6 in., bronze mounted on a light grey granite base – space available for 3 lines of text, maximum 22 characters per line.

All street tree and commemorative tree planting requests must be received by December 31 to be eligible for the following spring planting season. Tree choices must adhere to the Haldimand County street tree species list.

Street tree species list

We have an approved species list consisting mainly of native shade trees to promote biodiversity. Our approved species list offers a wide variety of tree species and sizes to suit various locations throughout the county - depending on soil type, sun/shade, wind, drought, salt tolerance, overhead and underground utilities and space available.

This diverse list provides resilience and diversity in streetscapes.

New subdivision tree planting

In newly constructed subdivisions, the developer or builder is responsible for street tree planting. Developers are required to submit a street tree planting plan to Haldimand County for approval. The selection and placement of the trees in a new subdivision is based on Haldimand County’s specifications for tree planting and there is little room for requests by homeowners for specific trees.

Infill tree planting

Haldimand County actively plants new trees on boulevards, and in parks and cemeteries throughout the county. These trees are planted in areas that are not managed by any adjacent landowners.
