Road plowing

It takes up to 24 hours to complete all plow routes after snow or ice has stopped falling. Following Ontario’s Municipal Act, we begin clearing roads when snow or ice reaches the required level. Our crews clear the main arterial roads first, followed by secondary roads, and then residential roads.

If your road is unplowed

If there's been a snowfall and your street has not been cleared yet, there could be several reasons for this:

  • The plow may have been salting/sanding the street/road only
  • If there are too many parked vehicles on the street/road, the snowplow may not have enough room to plow
  • As all roads are plowed by priority, if your street is a lower priority the plow may not have gotten to it yet

If you're concerned about snow removal on your street, contact us to report an issue.

Sidewalk  and roof clearing

We do not clear snow or ice from private driveways, roofs or sidewalks.

Property owners / occupants  are responsible for clearing the ice and snow from the sidewalks adjacent to their residences or businesses within 24 hours after the accumulation of such snow and ice.

If you have a fire hydrant in front of your property, you are also responsible for clearing the snow around the hydrant.

Property owners / occupants of any occupied or unoccupied building with a roof that slopes towards a sidewalk is responsible for the removal of snow and ice from the roof of their building.

Refer to our Removal of Snow and Ice By-law for more details on property owner responsibilities.

For any complaints regarding removal of snow and ice from sidewalks or roofs, please contact a Municipal Law Enforcement Officer

If you are a senior and need help with snow clearing, you can contact Haldimand Norfolk Senior Support Services for assistance.

When clearing driveways and sidewalks

You are not permitted to shovel, sweep, snowblow or deposit any snow, slush or ice from your property onto the road, and could be subject to fines for doing so.

  • Clear snow to the side of your property that the plow finishes on so less snow will be spread back across the driveway
  • Do not blow or place snow onto the roadway. Blow or place snow onto the boulevard or your own front/ side yard
  • Keep children off snow banks near the road
  • Even where permitted, keep cars off the street during and immediately following a snowfall
