Property Standards and Clean Yards

Haldimand County provides a number of regulatory by-laws that establish minimum standards for occupancy and maintenance of properties adding to the quality of life for residents.

Property Standards By-law

Our Property Standards By-law regulates items related to the maintenance and occupancy of a property, such as:

  • Maintenance standards of exterior walls, roofs and foundations, structural, heating, electrical, plumbing, interior structure and floors, doors and windows, stairs and railings, porches, fences and barriers
  • Occupancy standards, temperature and cleanliness of buildings
  • Maintenance of eavestroughs, downspouts and ponding water 
  • Vacant or damaged buildings
  • Removal of waste, rubbish and debris

Clean Yard By-law

Our Clean Yard By-law regulates items relating to litter, yard waste and property maintenance, such as:

  • Maintenance of yards by owners and occupants
  • Prohibition of domestic and industrial waste on lands
  • Prohibition of littering on public and private land
  • Prohibition of inoperable vehicles and vehicle parts
  • Grass and vegetation more than 8 inches in height

Boulevard Maintenance By-law

Our Boulevard Maintenance By-law regulates standards for care and upkeep of your property's boulevard.

This includes items such as:

  • Maintaining boulevard vegetation so as not to exceed 8 inches
  • Prohibiting waste on the boulevard
  • Prohibiting anything that would obstruct or impair the visibility for drivers

Fences and swimming pool enclosures in Haldimand County are regulated by municipal by-laws that set out standards for items such as height and materials. Learn more about fences in Haldimand


Weed Control Act

The Province of Ontario regulates the spread of noxious weeds through the Weed Control Act. Items noted under this Act include:

  • Reducing the impact of noxious weeds on agriculture and horticulture lands
  • Lawns, gardens, and private areas for personal enjoyment and leisure are generally excluded
  • Dandelions and goldenrod are not categorized as noxious weeds

Ontario classifies 25 weeds as noxious under the Act. Noxious weeds classified under the Act are included within our Property Standards By-law and Clean Yard By-law. Some common noxious weeds include:

  • Ragweed
  • Poison ivy
  • Wild parsnip
  • Thistles
  • Giant hogweed

Zoning by-laws

Our Comprehensive Zoning By-law regulates the types of land uses and activities permitted on a property or within buildings. Common property items noted under this by-law include:

  • Permitted uses on a property
  • Livestock on residential property
  • Recreational and commercial vehicle parking in residential zones
  • Home-based businesses
  • Property setback requirements for buildings, structures and other land uses
