Haldimand County is governed by a Mayor and 6 Councillors who meet on a 3-week cycle to make decisions on County business items, revenue and expenditure authorizations, land use planning, and strategic priorities.

Council priorities

At the beginning of each council term, the Mayor and Council hold strategic planning sessions to identify major initiatives and improvements it wants to achieve over the term.

These priorities help Council maintain strategic focus, manage workload and resources, and ensure items that bring value to the community are prioritized.

2022 to 2026 Council priorities

In addition to priority items that are already ongoing, Council has identified six new priorities for the 2022 to 2026 term.

Comprehensive financial strategy

Understand and predict the financial impact of growth and Provincial legislation on capital, infrastructure and operational programs.
Develop appropriate strategies, policies and service levels to manage impacts.

Traffic management strategy

Comprehensive approach to better managing traffic issues within the scope of municipal responsibility including capital items, communications, truck routes, policing.

Website improvements

Provide a more transparent and easier communication format for residents and businesses
Meet accessibility requirements

Ward realignment

Examine options and potential changes to current ward boundaries
Consider population growth
Capture communities of interest geographically

Physician recruitment strategy

Develop and present a program for Council approval that includes the municipal role, resources and partnerships to address shortage of doctors servicing Haldimand

Affordable housing strategy

Building off of the Haldimand Housing Master Plan (2021), create a consistent approach to define the municipal role, the supports to be provided, and policies to be able to respond consistently to opportunities to add new affordable housing.
