Inclusive Spaces

Inclusive Spaces Fund logo

The Inclusive Spaces fund is a Council approved budget of $50,000 to expedite accessibility improvements across existing county spaces and facilities. 

The goal of the fund is to enhance accessibility for those with disabilities and the aging population as well as to adhere to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The fund is meant to:

  • Improve accessibility and walkability
  • Reduce social isolation, improve inclusion and intergenerational connections
  • Increase opportunities for participation and volunteerism
  • Enhance access to municipal or community partner-led programs
  • Improve access to, and awareness of, health and community services
  • Make our communities safer

2024 Completed Projects

Accessible Rest Areas

  • A bench was added to the path near Grandview Lodge to provide a rest area for residents at the lodge and for members of the public who utilize this path
  • An accessible picnic table was added under the gazebo at Esplanade Park in Port Maitland to provide inclusive recreational options

Automatic Door Openers

  • Automatic door openers were added to the following areas:
    • Hagersville arena lobby to spectator area
    • Hagersville public accessible washroom with additional emergency alarm
    • Caledonia arena lobby to spectator area
    • Haldimand County Administration Building's Council Chamber doors

Accessible Pathways

  • One of the goals with Inclusive Spaces fund is to improved access to recreational activities
  •  A path was added from the parking lot at Dunnville Kinsmen park to one of the ball diamonds
    • This increases spectator viewing opportunities for those who utilize mobility aids

Inclusive Features

  • Community requests are a welcomed feature of the Inclusive Spaces Fund criteria
  • A request was made and a new accessible adult change table was installed at the Dunnville library, allowing community groups and individuals with specific needs to enjoy the library without barriers

Accessible Recreation

  • A waterproof wheelchair was purchased for use at the Caledonia Lions Pool
  • Residents will be able to book this chair free of charge for use at the Pool

2025 Prospective Projects

2025 Inclusive Spaces projects are already underway. If you have a community request related to an accessibility enhancement to  an existing space or facility at Haldimand County, please e-mail accessibility@haldimandcounty.on.ca
