Committee of Adjustment

The Committee of Adjustment is authorized by the Ontario Planning Act to grant severances through Consent or severance applications and minor variances from the provisions of the Zoning By-law. The Committee is independent of County Administration, comprised of Haldimand County residents and appointed by Council. The term of the Committee runs with the term of the Council.

About the Committee

Under the Provincial Planning Act, the committee can:

  • Grant minor variances from our Zoning By-law
  • Allow changes to legal non-conforming uses that current zoning does not permit
  • Give consent for land severance to divide a parcel of land into more than one lot or as lot additions to abutting properties
  • Give consent to mortgages, partial discharge of mortgages and validation of title
  • Give consent to leases over 21 years, quit claims, easements and rights-of-way
  • Consider and make decisions on applications for Validation of Title
  • Consider variances to our Sign By-law

The Committee of Adjustment and its application processes are separate and distinct from other municipal development approval processes. One or more of these processes may occur at the same time.

There are seven members appointed to the Committee of Adjustment. Members must be Haldimand County residents and all decisions must be made in public. The term of the Committee runs with the term of the Council.
